Buyer guide · Pricing
What determines the cost of custom packaging?
A competitive quotation is not simply the lowest unit price. It starts with a comparable specification, then balances material, quantity, colour, finish, schedule and delivery risk. This guide shows buyers what to prepare before requesting a quote.

Cost structure
Eight factors behind the quotation
Structure & size
Dimensions affect paper yield, tooling, assembly time and transport volume. A small structural adjustment can change total cost.
Material
Paper grade, thickness, recycled or FSC requirements, fabric, plastic and inserts have different purchase quantities and prices.
Order quantity
Prepress, tooling and setup costs are distributed across the run. Lower quantities normally have a higher unit cost.
Printing & colour
Spot colours, CMYK, colour matching, white ink and repeated approvals add different control requirements.
Finishing
Foil, embossing, lamination, varnish, windows, magnets, ribbons and manual assembly add process steps.
Sampling & tooling
Structural blanks, digital proofs and production-standard samples have different purposes, timing and setup costs.
Packing & delivery
Carton quantity, protection, split deliveries and destination affect logistics and damage risk.
Schedule
Standard materials and a realistic approval window support better planning; urgent or special-material projects may require another route.
How to improve the quote
Four ways to obtain a more competitive, usable offer
Compare the same specification
Keep dimensions, material, quantity, colour, finish, packing and delivery terms consistent across quotations.
Consolidate related print items
Hangtags, labels, cartons, bags and inserts can be reviewed together to reduce coordination and delivery fragmentation.
Separate essential and optional finishes
Ask for a base option and an upgraded option instead of forcing every finish into one version.
Approve against a defined sample
Record the approved material, colour tolerance, finish and assembly details before bulk production.
FAQ
Pricing questions buyers often ask
Can you quote from a photo or an existing sample?
Yes. A photo supports a preliminary estimate; a physical sample or complete specification makes the comparison more reliable.
Why does the unit price rise for a small quantity?
Prepress, tooling, machine setup and colour approval are spread over fewer pieces, while some materials have minimum purchase quantities.
Can the sample fee be credited to the bulk order?
It may be discussed by project, depending on sample type, tooling and the confirmed bulk order. It is not an automatic universal policy.
Can hangtags, labels, boxes and bags be quoted together?
Yes. Sincere Packaging can coordinate multiple packaging and print categories through one project plan.
